Dan Nicora Biography

Dan Nicora – Saxophone

 

Dan has a B.S. in Music Education from Duquesne University in his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA and a M.A. in Music Technology from Antioch University. Dan just finished his 36th year of teaching and currently is Director of Jazz Studies and Assistant Director of Bands in the Kettering City Schools where he teaches four big bands and a jazz combo. He also teaches concert bands at Van Buren Middle School and Kettering Fairmont High School. Dan was the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching award which honors the top ten teachers in Montgomery county. Dan has hosted and directed honors jazz ensembles for the Ohio Music Educators Association. He also has performed, presented, and directed ensembles for the OMEA Professional Conference several times throughout his career. He has been on the faculty of the Miami Valley Jazz Camp. Dan produced two volumes of MIDI accompaniments for Heritage Music Press band method books. Dan is an active clinician and adjudicator in local area jazz festivals. Dan was the past president of The Jazz Education Connection of Ohio and a member The Ohio Music Education Association.

 

Dan was a member of the United States Air Force Band of Flight where he played lead alto and traveled the United States with the group Flight One. For many years he performed on Barleycorn Riverboats in Cincinnati with The Eric Suttman Band. He played with the Jazz Central Big Band under the direction of Scott Belck and had the pleasure of performing with Steve Turre, Marvin Stamm, Claudio Rodoti, and John Riley. With the Dayton Jazz Orchestra he has had performances with Slide Hampton, Phil Woods, Bobby Shew, Diane Schuur, John Fedchock, Chris Vadala and Denis DiBlasio. Other performances include The Harry James Orchestra, The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Marvalettes, and The Dells. Since 2000 Dan has performed regularly with The O’Jays and also performs regularly with the Dayton Jazz Orchestra and Johnny Clueless.
